I have just seen your 2 queries on my earlier note. It seems that Michael Barstow came from Selby. According to some records I have in 1661 Edward Barstow yeoman of Selby gave his lands in Barlby to his eldest son Edward and also to the 3 sons Edward, Robert and Michael "5s and a piece in full satisfaction of their parts and portions". I think the Michael in question was the Michael Barstow of York who died in 1698, and whose family tree thereafter is well documented. Going further back in time there are various references in the Selby wills and Yorkshire fines, and various unidentified documents. For example,in 1629 Walter Barstoe of Barlesby Cooper gave his lands inBarlesby to Edward Barstoe, yeoman of Selby, and Robert Barstoe, shipmaster. We know that Robert Barstow was mudered by the Turks at Aleppo, Syria. As you will know Aleppo was the end of the silk road and there was considerable trade between England and the Middle East at that time.
Michael Barstow prospered. In 1663, he acqired Holme House situated at the confluence of the Dyon Beck and the Derwent (see history of Hemingbrough). The farmhouse-not particularly impressive- remained in my family at least until the end of the 19th Century. It is now owned by the Bramley family.. I visited it in 1988.
More interestingly, in 1685, Michael Barstow bought the Ryton estate, near Malton. This remained in the family until it was sold by my aunt following the death of her husband Michael Barstow in 1977. It was then sold to the Raines family who had continuously been tenants of the Barstows since 1734. The rent books, covering the whole period, are now now in the posession of one of my cousins.
As to the York Cemetery, this is the old cemetery in York. The Barstow tomb contains Thomas Barstow of Garrow Hill (1788-1868),his wife and most of his children including Aunt Lizzie who died at the age of 99 in 1926. Also in the tombis his grandson Montagu Barstow who married Baroness Orczy, creator of the Scarlet Pimpernel books.
I hope some of this is useful to you
