I may be able to help a little. In researching my direct line in New Zealand, I found Ellen BARRY who married John CULLINANE in Hokitika on 21 August 1870 (she was 18, he 32, and a ferryman). The witnesses were Abraham KINGSTON (a miner at South Spit), and crutially, Eliza BARRY (servant in Hokitika).Further research established that Eliza (who married Michael GORDON in 1872) was her sister and that there was another sister called Frances (who married Laurence O'CONNELL in 1881).This means that your Eliza was already in New Zealand by August 1870 (i.e. did not arrive on the Cardigan Castle).
The BARRYs were from Carrightwohill, County Cork (not Kerry), which would account for your family story about a castle. The area of Carrightwohill is dominated by the ruins of Barryscourt Castle (former stronghold of the Anglo-Norman Barrymore family). The direct line of the Barrymores died out I believe.
Ellen and John CULLINANE became farmers in the wanganui area and had a large family. They were staunch Catholics and one of their daughters became a nun [see note on Cullinane College below].John CULLINANE had been born in Caherberg, Rosscarberry, county Cork.CULLINANE cousins of John (from nearby Goleen area, County Cork), from whom I am descended, also settled, mainly in the wanganui area (also Palmerston North and in Dannevirke in the Hawkes Bay area), as farmers and contractors (builders/developers).One of the descendants of this line of CULLINANEs is the current Bishop of Palmerston North, Bishop Peter James CULLINANE.CULLINANE college in Wanganui is named after both strands of our CULLINANE family.
Hope this adds to your knowledge.Would love to hear back from you.
