Knickerbocker & Barringer (Berringer) in Lansing, Ingham County, Michigan 1870

I looked briefly at the Barringer/Berringer family because of the Knickerbocker living with them in the 1870 census. I have quite a bit of info on Theophilus, but would still like to ID his grandfather. I assume that Ann is the wife of Theophilus, but I am still wondering who she is, and whether there is a family connection between these Barringers and Knickerbockers. I am not actively pursuing this at this time, but thought these notes might help the others who are looking at this family right now.

1870 Census Ingham Co MI 4th ward, city of Lansing
166/252/267 3 Aug 1870
Berringer, Jacob W? 48 m w cooper ---/200 NY
Jane 33 f kpg house NY
       Mary A 13 f in school MI
       Willie 9 MI
George 9 m MI (later info suggests his age might be 7)
       Lillie 4 f MI
       Eddie 2 m MI
KNCKBROOCKER, Theophilus 35 m Cooper NY
       Ann 33 f NY

(I'm not sure if this connects, but GENDIS shows a Cetola Barringer d 10 May 1869 in Lansing. She was 11 years old and died of scarlet fever. Parents names are not listed.)

1873 - (note -- Jacob W Berringer is in 1873 Brown's Lansing City Directory corner of Turner & Clinton, Cooper --- this is an index - no mention of who is living with him--- didn't find any Knickerbockers in this directory)

1880 (from online transcription - LDS familysearch) Pierson, Montcalm Co MI pg 294b
Barringer, Jacob md m w 54 cooper NY NY NY; wife Jane is listed as Polly wife md f w 44 kh NY NY NY. (she should be the same person as she is listed as Jane in 1870, Polly in 1880, then again as Jane in 1900; she is prob. a Mary Jane or Polly Jane)
Children are all b MI pb NY - Willie 19, George 15, Lilly 12, Eddy 11, Minnie 9, Albert 4. Willie and George are listed as occ: cooper. Also, the transcriber changed the order of listings and added a note "Straggler moved from below".

The transcriber listed the next household as:
Petrie, Alexander md m w 37 NY NY NY
Mary A wife md f w 24 kh MI NY NY
Clara daughter 3 MI, Michel dau 2 MI.
(Mary A should be the one listed in the household of Jacob & Jane Berringer in 1870. I have checked the record at the courthouse, but the Dibean Marriage Index shows Mary Alice Barringer married Alexander Petrie 23 March 1876 Ingham Co MI).

Though they don't list his parents, some online files show that George Barringer (birthdate varies) d 22 Apr 1909 in Lansing and that he married ca 1888 in Pierson, Montcalm Co MI to Lucina Bell (Sina) Smith (b 1869 Muskegon d 1896 Grand Rapids). These files show that George and Lucina had a daughter Myrtle Dee Barringer b 30 Mar 1889 Hart, Oceana Co MI, so I think it is a safe assumption that this is George of this same Barringer family and that the Myrtle listed in Jane's household in 1900 has to be his daughter. (George is still listed with his parents in 1880, and "Sina" is listed with hers in Muskegon same year).

There are some trees online which include Albert Martin Barringer b 14 April 1876 Lansing, Ingham Co MI, d Feb 1942 in Muskegon. He should be the son of Jacob & Jane.

Best of luck.
