Hi Stephanie, I don't know anyone that isn't confused about the spelling of our surname prior to the 1800's or shortly thereafter. In Susanna (Sauer) Barrier's February 1814 request for division of lands belonging to her deceased husband George Barrier, the spelling of the surname for both Susanna and George is spelled BERYER. When Suanna made her mark on that document, it was spelled BERRIER. Her son Phillip made his mark beside BERRIER and her son Henry signed his name BAR???? (not clear on the copy I have). On the grave stone for Susanna it is spelled SUSANNA BERRIER and on her husbands grave stone it is JORGE BARIER. In the Division of Lands document dated August 1814 it is spelled GEORGE BARRIER. I wish we had documentation on something older than 1814. These are the only spellings of our surname I can document.
