You have a Malcolm Barrier, who you thought was a son of John Barrier and Nancy Witt.
There IS a Malcolm of that era, but he was the son of Mike T Barrier and Rebecca Ryan Masters Horton Barrier. Mike T Barrier was the FATHER of John Thomas Barrier. Mike and his first wife Amanda Smith were the parents of John Barrier and Amanda Barrier, and probably other children not in my records. Amanda Smith Barrier died in 1883.
Mike then married Rebecca Ryan Masters Horton, who had been twice widowed, and who had 3 children with her first husband, and one with her second husband. Rebecca and Mike had only one child I am sure of, and his name was Malcolm, born about 1884. I have nothing else on Malcolm Barrier, and found him through census records living with Mike and Rebecca in 1900.
The confusion thickens, because two of Rebecca's grand daughters - Lillie and Nora JOHNSON - married two of Mike's grandsons - Thomas Jefferson and William Tell Barrier. The mother of those two girls was Rebecca's eldest child and only daughter, Lula Masters Johnson. Just to confuse things even MORE, Lula Masters Johnson and her husband Samuel Thomas Johnson ALSO had a son named Malcolm Theodore Johnson, born in 1887. So mother Rebecca and daughter Lula each had sons named Malcolm, born 3 years apart.
