BonJour Herve My grandmother was Bertha Laura "Bessie" Barrier. Our family lore is that we are french huguenots who fled France abt 1640 to Toggenberg Valley, Switzerland in the German speaking (east) section of the country. My "Bariers" can first be documented in 1759 in Rowan Co, North Carolina as Charles Berriger or Berger. They were speaking and writing in German. About the 1800's they stopped using the name Berger and began using the name Bearyer and Barrier or Berrier. The following estate of Georger Beryer shows that the name is spelled 5 different ways in the same document. Please note that Susanna and George's children make their mark "X" and the English clerk? writes the name "Berrier". Their son Henry writes his name "Barrier". So I am a "Barrier" because Henry (my ancestor) signed his name and the descendents of the other children who made their mark "X" are all "Berriers" today. (grin) ftp://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/nc/rowan/court/geober.txt if this doesn't work try http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/nc/rowanc.htm I am disappointed in Geneanet, not because I can't speak french (Alta Vista has a translator) but most of the contributors seem to be commercial rather than volunteers. Will we be expected to pay for the information? Bye Stephanie
