James, This information is very interesting to me. I know that Abraham Barrier was listed as an "Undesirable Torry" in Mecklenburg, S.C. in the late 1700s. Abraham was the ancestor of the Wayne Co, KY Barriers (ie, Rev. Richard Barrier). But this is the first I have heard of the Barriers coming from England. The other "traditions", based on some documents, are that they came from Germany (Wurttemberg) or Switzerland (sennewald, Sankt Galen). Unless Abraham was a Hessian soldier (not likely living in the open in N.C.), I don't know why he would side with England. But if he were English, or sponsored by England in some way, or had religious convictions not to test authority, he may have remained a loyalist even under such intense social pressure. Is this tradition that you have had passed down to you, or is there some documentation to substantiate it? Either way, it is intriguing. Bret Barrier Notify Administrator about this message?
