Hi Bill,
How kind of you to respond to my query.
I have been trying to put together my family history
for 13yrs now and more often than not, threaten to
quit as I am still w/o any connections.
Believe the mention of the colored child was something re: the Babcock surname but must go back to RI Forum to be sure.
I have a theory that my VA ancestors were among those who
migrated to Nova Scotia and Canada in 1783 and from there
removed to RI where they intermarried w/whites and Indians.
Nowhere, have I been able to determine just where the free
Black WEEDENS of early RI, came from, so this makes sense.
Also, I do know that many RI slaveholders removed to Charleston, SC to avoid paying heavy fines for owning slaves, and there are too many similar names in both places to be of coincidence.
Altho family lore tells of being FPOC coming from England as indentured servants, I first find my ggrandfather, WM LAWRENCE WEELDON, Black, born in 1829 SC and believe he was a slave of the WHEELDON/WHILDEN family of Christ Church, SC.
Where he was prior to 1870 Wilmington, NC is still to be
discovered altho I suspect that he may have been in TN or
KY.
My ggrandmother, CHARATA BROWN (WEELDON), Native American,
is listed as born in 1833 NC, but I have had absolutely no
success in finding any previous info of her or any BROWNS.
Unfortunately, I must rely totally on the internet for all
info, due to health reasons.
Feel strongly, that somebody knows something and trying my
best to hang in.
Thanks again for your reply and now I must find out abt your book.
Most sincerely,
carol wheeldin warren.
