The earliest Barrera in Nueva Espana was Cristobal Barrera he is listed as a Conqueror
in the book "The Encomenderos of New Spain 1521-1555 by Robert Himmerich y Valencia, published by the University of Texas Press.
The use of the term Conqueror means that he was among the reinforcements that came to to Cortez and not among his first group. That would still have made him present at the siege of Tenochitilan. He got in trouble with Inquisition and had land in Puebla.
Coat of Arms for the Barreras has several variations revolving around a central tower in silver or a Castle in gold. They all have a field of Blue, one well known version is divided I have seen both per-pale and per-fess with one halve with the silver tower and the other with 5 gold fleur-de-lis arrainged saltire. The whole is surounded by a red bordure upon which are 8 gold saltire crosses. The crosses probably refer to service in the crusades.Whether the crusades were in Spain against the Moors in France against the Abigensians, in North Africa, the Mediteranian or the Holy land I couldn't say. But there were Barreras in all the major Holy Orders of Spain as well as the Templars and the Knights of the Hospital.
