GUSTAVO “BITO” BARRERA
LOS FRESNOS — Gustavo “Bito” Barrera died on Thursday, Dec. 16, 1999.
He was born on Dec. 7, 1938, to Rafael and Margarita Broughton Barrera in
Port Isabel. He was married to Ruth Combs Barrera on Dec. 20, 1966. He
attended Our Lady Star of The Sea Catholic Church School in Port Isabel,
graduated from Port Isabel High School in 1956 and is a graduate of Texas
A&M University in 1960. He taught school in Port Isabel and was math
department head at Los Fresnos High School for many years. He was also a
rancher and a shrimp boat owner. He was director of the Texas Shrimpers
Association, director of First Valley Bank, member of the Texas Cattleman’s
Association and a member of the St. Cecilia Catholic Church in Los Fresnos.
Mr. Barrera was preceded in death by his parents, Rafael and Margarita B.
Barrera; brothers, Rafael Barrera Jr., Joe Barrera, William Barrera, Ramiro
Barrera and two infant sisters. Survivors include his wife, Ruth Combs Barrera
of Los Fresnos; son, Richard Barrera of Port Isabel; daughter, Anna Barrera of
Galveston; brothers, Ruben Barrera of Laguna Vista and Robert Barrera of Del
Rio; sisters, Ernestina Barrera of Port Isabel and Margaret Davis of Bayview;
and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held from 6:30- 9:30 p.m. today, Friday, Dec. 17, 1999, in the
East Chapel of Darling-Mouser. The Prayer service is scheduled to begin at 8
p.m. with Brother George Morrison officiating. The funeral service is scheduled
for 2 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 18, 1999, at St. Cecilia Catholic Church in Los
Fresnos with Father Charlie Garza officiating. Burial will follow at Mont-Meta
Burial Park in San Benito. Serving as pallbearers are Ruben Barrera, Jr.,
Reynaldo Barrera, Ramiro Barrera, Jeff Zimmerman, Ralph Barrera, and Danny
Davis.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made to the
Gustavo “Bito” Barrera Texas A&M scholarship fund for a Los Fresnos High
School graduate.

Brownsville.
