Baron from Germany, Berlin

I am very interested in knowing where my family name comes from. I only know that all of my ancestors, as far as I can see, have been born and living in Berlin, but there might be some people that have been emigrating as well. I always thought that the name is of french origin, probably a descendent of the aristocratic title. But lately I heard it might be that the name is a shortening of "the man who lived on the baron's territories". Does anyone know more about it?
