Hi Fred,
James H. Barnwell was born in Beaufort, South Carolina before moving to Georgia and never married before volunteering as a member of the Georgia Battalion for the Independence of Texas.
From the Brown Family Tree posted at Ancestry his parents were John Bernes Barnwell and Elizabeth Christiana Stoll from Beaufort, South Carolina.
By the 1858 Court of Claim records at the General Land Office of Texas, James H. Barnwell's father, John Bernes Barnwell had since passed away and his mother listed as Eliza C. Barnwell was named his heir.
Also named in these records are James H. Barnwell's brothers, Edward W. Barnwell and John B. Barnwell along with sisters, Sophia Barnwell and Elizabeth "Bonnie" Barnwell and all living in Georgia.
