I have traced my Barnsley ancestors back to Shropshire also. My ancestor is a John Barnsley, born about 1804 in Wellington, died in 1873 in nearby Wombridge. He was a boiler-maker whose second marriage was to a Jane Griffith in Runcorn, Cheshire, in 1841. Any information on this Barnsley family would be appreciated.

A note on Shropshire Barnsleys in general, in reply to the eariler message: in the 18th and 19th centuries, the name Barnsley occurs frequently in the towns Wellington, Wombridge and Shifnal (near Shrewsbury), and is occasionally found in one or two other Shropshire towns.

These towns expanded during the industrial revolution, and at least some of the various Barnsley families in them, who mostly have working-class occupations, seem to be inter-related.

This area is close to the West Midlands (originally part of Staffordshire) where the Barnsley name is most frequent.
