Cynthia;
Please notice I have not documented the name of this individual or his parentage. (His name might be Samuel). He fits into this family with the following assumed links... He named his son (middle name ) "Allen" which could link him to Allen Barnhill - possibly a first cousin. This is a very thin assumption, but the name "Allen" is uncommon in the Barnhill family. My choice candidate is Thomas Barnhill, found (only) in the 1840 Federal census of Tishomingo County, Mississippi. His middle name very well could be "Samuel". There has been some discussion on the internet about the two boys, Leonard and Samuel.. According to the internet sources, they were orphaned and raised in an orphanage in Natchez, Mississippi as "Bonhills".I think I'm about the only researcher who has associated these two with Thomas Barnhill, born in Harrison County, Ohio. UPDATE 2013: The 1910 Federal census of Goshen, Tuscarawas County, Ohio indicates Thomas Barnhill (age 60) was living in the household of his son-in-law, Thomas Ridgway. The enumerator's data indicates he was born in Ohio, as were both of his parents and his wife, Sarah Ridgway, was born in Ohio, 1856. This probably eliminates the family relationship to the "Sarah Armstrong" who was born in Mississippi, 1853. Cannot verify by marriage records yet. Is the census enumerator's data incorrect? Are we looking for the same "Sarah" who either died or remarried? I'm still working on these questions. ~ Stan ~
