Received a letter from James Perrin yesterday and his family history is at Ancestry.com along with his correct e-mail address if you are interested?
Haven't put my hands on it yet but do you remember a conversation we had previously about an Early MS Spanish record I had found online for Dorthea or Dorotea Barnhill?
John W. Barnhill and Dorothy Dortch Barnhill were living in Spanish West Florida by 1793 when the Spanish census was done.
In 1805 Dorothy and John Barnhill were farming 913 arpents of land at Alexander's Creek, near present day St. Francisville, LA near Dorothy's Dortch siblings and cousins.
John W. Barnhill seems to have died between May 1809 when they sold their land near St. Francisville, LA and 27 Jul 1810 when Dorothy Dortch Barnhill remarried Benjamin Wells in Wilkinson Co, MS.
Dorothy was living in 1830 when she filed a land claim for property near St. Francisville, LA.
Mr. Perrin also listed John W. Barnhill and Dorothy Dortch Barnhill's children as being:
Henry Barnhill who died ca. Jan-Apr 1815, according to his probate file of 1815. Henry had been a soldier in the U. S. Army and his estate was due this back military pay. Possibly died during the Battle of New Orleans 8 Jan 1815?
Maria A. Barnhill b. ca. 1803, living in 1838 when she filed a petition in East Feliciana Parish, LA concerning her brother John's estate.
John A. Barnhill b. ca. 1808, never married, went to TX and d. 27 Mar 1836 at Goliad, TX.
Court of Claims Record #00391 found at the TX General Land Office online for John H. Barnhill are clearly meant to be for John N. Barnhill and contain letters and other documents pertaining to John's heirs the Carters and by marriage, Walker and Badger families who were cousins by mother Ann Dortch Carter, wife of Parsons Carter.
The Carter's lived in Wilkinsons Co. MS before settling in Feliciana Parish, LA and these records state that John N. and Maria Barnhill were raised by Parsons and Ann Carter. Ann Dortch Carter would be Dorothy Dortch Barnhill's sister and John and Maria Barnhill may very well have lived with the Carters after John W. Barnhill's death and Dorothy Dortch Barnhill's remarriage to Benjamin Wells.
In 1858 when the Commissioner of TX posted a letter to the heirs of men who died during the Independence of TX apparently most of the interested parties for John N. Barnhill or John A. Barnhill, as Mr. Perrin lists him, had died as well and only the extended relatives who were on intimate terms with John filed claims. Doesn't mean he didn't have other relatives somewhere else but these families were in LA having grown up with John and other Barnhill family had probably lost contact with John W. Barnhill after his moved to LA.
Interesting because the Carters and extended families also had wealth and political influence in LA during that period of time. A. G. Carter was the owner of Linwood Planatation and on intimate terms with the governor, related judges and other persons of influence which might have tipped the scales in their favor a bit.
So, maybe this John A. Barnhill really isn't John N. Barnhill who stated he was born in GA and joined Cpt. Shackelford's Red Rovers in AL but the Carter families from Felciana Parish, LA were definately his heirs.
