We believe that barnhart is swiss word taken from bernhardt which means strong bear.
Some chose to drop the d in barnhardt,as well as some to aid pronounciation changed e to a .Our families have very strong religous
background and left Europe searching for freedom of religion,eventually arriving in North America. Some left the U.S. and went to Canada. At one time until the StLawrence Seaway,Barnhart Island was given the the family is a token of appreciation of service to the Queen during the 1812 war..wish you well in your search.
