Hello,

I might be a distant cousin, a descendant of Margaret Barnhart who married John Phillips in 1817. Otherwise I have no connection with your family. But I did happen to have a couple of records in my files. I think you will be looking at Ohio. Emma Jane Barnhart who married Ed Hickman said at the time of the 1880 US Census that she was born in Illinois, and both of her parents were born in Ohio. She and Ed and family are living at Chester, Logan, Illinois - they are living with Ed's mother Sophia, and five children.

I also found that William Barnhart married Lucinda Greer in Pickaway, Ohio.

William born 1834 in Ohio is living at the time of the 1880 US Census with a new wife named Margaret born 1842 in Ohio, and your ancestor Charles born 1862 in Illinois is living with them, along with Amanda and Lena (?) - perhaps the same as Mary Luetta in your list. The other children you name are not there, although William has living in the household three stepchildren by his wife's first husband, with the surname Bush.

William, with his new wife, son Charles, and some other children, are living in 1880 at Monticello, Piatt, Illinois, according to the census.

This William Barnhart born 1834 in Ohio gives his occupation as 'teamster', and states that his father was born in Pennsylvania and his mother was born in Ohio.

That's all I have. Your Charley Jay was born in Illinois to William born in Ohio. Charley states that his mother, as well as his father, was born in Ohio. So evidently William's first wife Lucinda died 1877 in Illinois, and William remarried to his second wife Margaret, who had been previously married to a Bush.

Good luck digging back. It is possible that William's father was named Charles, as it was a common custom to name the second son after the paternal grandfather.
