William V. "Billy" Smith (Wilhelm Schmidt)
There are conflicting stories about William. One he was born in South Carolina, another that he came directly from Germany and settled in Cabarrus County, NC, returned to Germany but came back again through the port of Charleston, South Carolina, then settled near Barriers Mill.
After the death of his wife, William went to live with his son, Nelson, where he took pneumonia, died, and had to be buried in Stanly County, NC because of a heavy snow fall. He was buried in an unmarked grave at Flat Rock Lutheran Cemetery located on highway #200. The census of 1850 does show William as being in the household of Nelson Smith, age 83.

In record of Peter Rothrock 1851-April 25 attended to the funeral of Wm. Smith, Sun. buried him at Jacob Smith's burying ground.

Notes for Moses Smith:
Family tradition has it that after Moses Smith's first wife, Mary Dry, died, he hired a very young girl to do some housekeeping. Becky's father, Adam Whitley, had gone away to war and had died, leaving her with a very cruel stepmother, Nell. When Moses Smith and Becky were married, his children were upset because Becky was about the same age as his youngest son, Archabald, but the day they were married, Moses' daughters came in and cooked a very nice meal for the newly married couple to have when they returned home.
After Moses died, his sons by Mary Dry gave Rebecca a considerable amount of money for his property and she moved to another area. She married Frank Clark who beat the oldest son, Lemuel, until he ran away from home one night, going to Mooresville where he lived with the Will Templeton family and worked for his living.
Ephraim and Jim, the second and third son, stayed near their mother who divorced Frank Clark and later married the third time.
