The father of Daniel Barnhart (2nd) of Franklin Co. Virginia (from 1786 to 1800) is the issue being raised here. The only solid fact that is shown is the name on his marriage bond to Elizabeth Naff (12 Feb 1786) is written as Daniel Barnhart Sr. Family stories from his son Daniel Barnhart (3rd) say he was the eldest of 3 brothers and 2 or 3 sisters. The Brothers names are given as Daniel, David, John (some Jacob) with no names of the sisters. The family stories of his son John give the same names. Now this could be the same source for both accounts. Note that Josephuses book does not give a parent for Daniel 2nd. In an article in the Brethren Genealogist newsletter Carolyn Denligner states that Daniel 2nd father may have been an Anthony Barnhart but gives no explanation. In questioning others who had done research over the years I find that several have heard this and it came from individuals whose they work they trusted. However these original sources have past on with no solid evidence given. There existed an Anthony Barnhart who died in 1808 in Frederick Co. Maryland. In his will he states his children as Jacob, David, and Daniel (Deceased), his daughters were Esther Shriver, Catherine Miller, and Elizabeth Fitzmiller. In this will Daniel’s children were to receive their inheritance 3 years after his death. His death occurred in the fall of 1808 so Daniel’s children would receive the inheritance in the fall of 1811. There were no Barnhart’s listed in the 1776 MD census so he moved there after that. My point here is there were very few Barnhart’s in that location and how many would have the same family names with the son Daniel having died early? Something to think about but no proof. In rereading some early papers that I have I found a memorial for Daniel 3rd. In this article it states his father died when he was a child. He then had to look for protection to his widowed mother and while in his boyhood had to venture into the world and seek refuge. He went to Maryland and went to school there for a few years. Now in 1801 to 1806 how many 10 to 16 year old boys would have the luxury of find a family to support them and let them go to school Vs becoming an apprentice to a tradesman or farm labor other than a family member? Why did he go 200 miles to Maryland when his mother’s father lived a few miles if he did not know someone there? In county records Daniel 3rd purchased land in the spring of 1812. This would be a few months after the inheritance from Anthony would be available. With as much of the above fitting so well I am beginning to think that this Anthony has to be Daniel 2nds father. The entry on Daniel 2nds marriage bond is then in error or as was not uncommon his father was Anthony Daniel Barnhart. With his brothers all having been named Anthony after their father went by their middle name part of the time. Please pass on any comments, as this is why I am posting this. Thanks Mike
