My great grandmother was Elizabeth Catharine Bernhardt. She was born in Habitzheim, Germany on April 13, 1826. Her father was
Peter Bernhardt; her mother Elisabetha Schafer. I do not have information as to Peter's parents. Elizabeth Catharine married Johannes Horneff and they eventually came to the US. In doing the Horneff lineage, I was fortunate to find our German roots, and long lost German kin. We have since visited the area twice. Grosszimmern is a stone's throw from Habitzheim and Gundernhausen, which is the home of our German cousins. All are small villages on the outskirts of Darmstadt, Hesse. I would be most appreciative of any information you might have regarding the German Bernhardts. I have a feeling, because of the proximity, and the population of the villages, that we are probably related many grandfathers ago.
