Here's what I've gathered concerning Wesley's life-
He was born Dec 20, 1828, Cabarrus Co, died March 4, 1897, Cabarrus Co.Married Eliza Starns May 8, 1858, Cabarrus. Her parents were George Starns & Linda Medlin. He might be the Wesley 'Caswell', son of John & Delilah, found in 1850 Almonds, Stanly Co census, he's the right age and the spelling might be off.Do you know who John & Delilah are?
Civil War:he's found in the "Roster of Confederate Soldiers", vol 1, by Broadfoot, which lists his name as "W. Barneycasel, NC 57th Regt".National Archives receipts (I've only seen the microfilms) lists his name Barneycassel as well as Castle, Cassle and Cassel.
Wesley enlisted in Rowan Co.July 4, 1862, and served in Co.H, 57th Regiment as a private.I notice that John, Joseph, and Eli Castle served in Co. B, 7th Regt. of NC Infantry, along with Solomon, Wiley C, and William Starns, relations of Wesley's wife, Eliza Starns.Eli named a son John Wesley Cassel/Castle.
Wesley was hospitalized at Richmond March 23, 1863, with pneumonia.Transferred to Salisbury April 17, 1863.Returned to duty May 11, 1863.Wounded in the right arm at Gettysburg, PA July 1, 1863.Right arm amputated.Captured in Maryland July 5, 1863.Hospitalized at Chambersburg, PA, July 18, 1863.Transferred to hospital at Harrisburg, PA then Baltimore, MD in August.Paroled at Baltimore Aug. 23, 1863, received at City Point, VA, Aug. 24 1863, for exchange.Reported absent wounded until Nov. 26, 1864, when he was retired to the Invalid Corps.
"Eliza Cassle"applied for widow's pension June 1, 1901, listed as age 68, resident of Mt. Pleasant, Cabarrus Co, NC.
Religion:Wesley served on the Board of Dtewards for Cold Springs Methodist Church in 1868 and thereafter. He was a popular speaker at church and other social gatherings, regaling people with his stories of war experiences (sure wish someone had written them down).
Wesley's will, dated May 3, 1897, probated July 1897, leaves all his property to his "beloved nephew" Luther Alexander Bowers, property worth $450.Eliza is co-executor of will.I'm speculating that the nephew is son of one of Wesley's sisters, but could also be the son of one of Eliza's sisters.
Census: 1850 Almonds, Stanly census mentioned above a good possiblity for Wesley's family.
1860, Wesley & Eliza Cassell, he has $500 property value, $1500 personal property.
1870 census Wesley and Eliza Cassell (looks close to Caswell), Albertine Starnes, age 16, also EJ Allman, age 11.Two neighbors down is Solomon Little and Sarah, with ML Starns, age 21, living with them.
1880 census, Dutch Buffalo, Cabarrus Co NC:Wesley Casels, wife Eliza, J. Laura Casels niece 15, T. Luther Bowers nephew 6.Also in Cabarrus, James Bowers born 1846, wife Mary, children Sarah, John, Lavinia, Thomas and Minnie.I've tried to find more about J. Laura Casels without any success.
That's all for Wesley!
