J'wan Linda,
This is a long one!
Nyeahweh (Thank You) for your kind words. It took a long time to find what little I did find because my grandfather Newell Barneycastle was taught to be ashamed of his Tuscaroran heritage, and both him and my Aunt Katie said they could never speak of their grandparents. So for over 10 years I searched high and low, and when I finally stumbled upon our true heritage on their side, and took the info to my grandaddy he just said OK well you found it.. I was so angry because they would not help me. Yet after I finally uncovered it he admitted to it and started talking. His sister, the only one I really knew well, was Aunt Katie, she was afraid I would get shot in the back.
There is a story behind that fear they had.

Anyway our John Barneycastle b. 1816 married Mary (Polly) Tillet b.1820, was in Davie County by then, my grgrandfather was born to them, among others, Nathan Tillet Barneycastle b. 1853 who married (his second wife), my grandfathers mother Maggie Ellis Cherry. Both had been married previously and between them were 9 children that I know of.

I've seen the John Barneycastle in Mechlenburg Co NC 1820 he married a Sarah Atkinson.
I didn't know their were two siblings.

The early records I have in 1713 Barnwell came through the Tuscarora territories on his rampage, he was angry because all he got was one little girl from the village of Inneiuts, then in 1747 Edmond & James Barns-castle were on the s. side of the Neuse River.
Owen Slaughter and William Hooten both deeded them 50a. They also bought items from the estate of John Smith. Then Craven Co. made it a law that Indians couldn't own land.

Then by 1780-90 Richard and Beverly-male were in Bertie County as bondsmen, meaning they were under a bondage. And there was a Sarah Barnacastle who was listed as head of a household of 9 slaves. In Sans Souci Bertie County.
Now both Richard and Beverly had only 2-4 children.
It is believed that this Sarah was married to a Dempsey, and the 9 slaves were in fact her husband and their 8 children. They left and Sarah disappeared, and their is a Barneycastle family who was removed to Ohio, as were the Nottoway's who were the Eel Clan of the Tuscarora.
Many Nottoway, and Tuscarora were removed for being rebelrousers and troublemakers to the Quaker communities. And the Quaker's took them in, and were the only settlers who refused to raise arms against the Tuscarora. This was 1790, now there were only the three of them listed. But by 1800 only Richard and Beverly were found there.

By 1810 John Barneycastle was listed as being in Rowan Co.
Beverly was listed in Beaufort Co NC was probally the son of the 1st Beverly because he was still listed as being in Bertie Co.

1820 John was listed again in Rowan Co.
And Fredrick was listed but no data was entered.
1830 Francis Barneycastle was in Winston Salem,
Richard was also listed in Martin Co

1840 Samuel Barnacascle Bertie
Kenneth Barnacassele Bertie
Beverly Barnacastle Bertie
John Barnacaslte Sr. Davi
John Barnacosth Sr. Davi (same indivual?)
Pleasant Barnacostle Davi
Francis Barnecastle Salem District

Our side the origins were Chief Cashie's son was called Cucha Macha changed over in spellings to Cucklemaker. Anyway Chief Cucha Macha had a Tuscaroran wife named Martha Butler, they had two children, one being Hariett Butler who married James Barneycastle in Martha's will of 1844 her brother Levin Butler was the executor of her estate and she left provisions to her two grandchildren of her daughter Hariett and son-in-law James Barneycastle.
Meanwhile Chief Cucha Macha married a French widow called Elizabeth Calais/Cale and she gave him her fathers name of John Cale. His father Chief Cashie disowned him.
And from the information I gathered from my grandaddy shows they did come from Bertie County.
Then were removed to Halifax/Warren Counties which joins up to Meclenburg VA and there was a community there called Davie township.
And the family split, some stayed in Davie/Rowan Co's. Some went to Winston Salem. His family moved to Charlotte Mechlenburg county when grandaddy was 6 years old. from Davi.

And the other information from the Barneycastle family that are related to us is where the interesting information comes in.
George washington Barneycastle married Angeline Mizell daughter of Aaron and Francis Mizell. They had 5 children:
1. Matilda M. 1835
2. William Ralph 1838 married Mary Margaret Phelp's 3-11-1868-they had Harriet penelope who married Thomas Bowen.
3. Francis M.1839 raised by Levi Hardin and his wife Mary Caroline Barneycastle, who was Francis's 1st cousin. Francis married William Bowen 1857 who died in Andersonville prison during the Civil war. She then married George Harrell in 1865.
4. Celia 1840-1843
5. George Washington Barneycastle 1843. He's the one raised by James Wilson.
Then Angeline died 1844, and George apprenticed all the children out except the eldest son.
Then George married Susannah Pierce they had 11 children:
1. Kenneth 1846
2. Samuel 1849 m. Harriet Geraldine Scott in Missouri.
3. James Henry 1850 or 1853 married Elizabeth Phelp's, then Harriet Thompson.
4. Martha Ann 1852 m. James Langdale.
5. George Thomas 1856 m. Ellen Barnacastle
6. Susan Victoria 1859 m. John Bass.
7. John Lewis 1860 m. Fanny Sawyer 12-1881, this John was reported to have drowned in the creek. His clothes were found but his body never was....
8.Charles H.1862
9. Joseph Edward 1864 m. Annie Matthews 1887,
Odessa Smithwick.
10. Elizabeth J.1867
11. Isadora E. 1869
George Washington Barneycastle died in 1881, survived by his wife Susan. Bertie county.

Now that I got all this out I can print it and get the rest of the info I have to match up others with their parents.

For example there was a Buck Barneycastle in Bertie who married another Ellis girl, they ran the store. people around the Sans Souci area said he looked white and she looked black. Yet he would tell you in a minute he wasn't white and she wasn't black. Then at the same time there was a Buck Barneycastle living in Davie County 14 yrs old. He was probally named after his uncle here in Bertie County.

And we had a Martha Barneycastle who married Dr. John Sears in union township in Hertford County. And Sears is one of the oldest Indian names in the records here in Hertford County.
And in 1861-63 Buffaloe Soldiers-were Indians until 1863 when the first black regiments came into the war. Charles Barneycastle was a Lt in the Union Army under Cpt. Hoggard. Him and Hoggard, and Johnson and Thomas set depth charges from a canoe in a galiant effort to sink the iron maiden.
Yet three other Barneycastle brothers George, William, and Samuel were listed in the Durgan district as being Confederates.

Some of this information can be found in Gerald Thomas's book "divided allegiances" Some can be found in my book Onkwehonweh-the first people-Tuscarora.

Keep one thing in mind; the area around the people was renamed, for example Hertford, & Northampton county was cut out of Bertie County in 1759.
And so on. A lot of the original records were in Chowan county. But of course most of the old records are gone because during the war most of the court houses were burned to the ground. This helped cover a lot of dirt done to our people!

Hope this helps you in your search and I'll be tying things together.
Take care and walk in balance
Marilyn Dreamwalker mejorado-Livingston
