Hi Linda -
We published a nice article about Charles Lloyd Barney, "The Strongest Man in the World," in our December 1998 newsletter. Here are a couple of excerpts: -- Cliff in Virginia
Charles Lloyd Barney was born in Michigan on October 16, 1874 --- although one newspaper article says he was born and raised in Iowa. Sometime during his youth the family moved to Ottawa, LaSalle Co., Illinois where his father, John Barney became Superintendent of the old Gay carriage factory, then a leading industry in Ottawa.
He had two siblings: His sister Lulu Maude Barney died in 1944 at the age of 71.She lived in Des Moines, Iowa until 1929, when she moved to California. His brother Leslie moved to California, where he died; he is buried in the Forest Lawn Cemetery in Glendale.
Charles Lloyd Barney attended Des Moines and Ohio Wesleyan Colleges. At Ohio Wesleyan he was a classmate, teammate and roommate of Fichliug II “Hurry Up” Yost, who retired as Athletic Director of the University of Michigan. They were also fraternity brothers, members of Sigma Chi. They played together on the college football team, where Charlie Barney was a football star, playing center. Field Yost went on to become head football coach at the University of Michigan, and to make that university’s team, year after year, one of the top notch teams in the entire nation.
Barney played football with professional teams after leaving college and while he was serving as athletic instructor. He was a member of the Latrobe All Star Football team, Latrobe, Pennsylvania in 1908. He was a college instructor of physical culture and was a football coach at Gem City College at Quincy, Illinois. He was on the faculty of the Gem City Business College at Quincy and also a member of the faculty at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa. He was also the physical director of the Des Moines Athletic Club.
He married, about 1904, Elise Victoria Humblet of Ottawa, LaSalle Co., Illinois. They had four sons, “none of whom inherited his powerful physique, but all of the boys are six feet tall or over.”He died in 1912 when he was only 38 years old.
