There was no close relationship between the large Barney family of Cass Co., Mich. and the family of Ariel Barney (father of Fayette). The Barneys of Cass Co., Mich. have been traced back to Jacob Barney Sr. who came to Salem, Mass. in the early 1630s; the lineage of Ariel Barney is traced back only a couple of generations to Litchfield Co., Vermont.
You state that Carrie Barney and daughter Nellie were in Marquette, Mich. in 1870, but I don't find them there. Rather, they (and another daughter, Hattie) are in Escambia Township, Delta Co., Mich. in 1870 and also in 1880:
