Hi Othella,
At this stage I honestly can't say whether your Benjamin S. Barnes relates back to the VA Barnes. Were your Barnes from Nash or Northampton Counties of NC?
Bennett Barnes is shown as marrying Susanna Whitehorn 1815 Sussex Co.Then in each deed where he sold lands in Greensville Co., his name is written as Benjamin Barnes.I would think this might be an error in one year, but this is over a span of several years.
I also can't imagine why I haven't located a Sukey, Susan, Susanna or Susannah who married John Barnes by now, nor a reference to her having paid property taxes in Greensville Co. prior to 1811, as she was there in 1804 when her son William Barnes died and also to give permission for her daughter Sally to marry in 1792.In fact, there are no Barnes on the property taxes of Greensville Co. prior to 1811, yet we know that the lands owned by William Barnes were given to his mother Susannah in 1804 through his estate.
Now whether this family first moved to NC and then returned I have no idea.I'm sorry that I can't help you at present with your Benjamin S. Barnes.Have you come across a Richard Barnes?Susannah's son Richard died in 1825 Greensville Co.Yet, there was also a Richard Barnes who came into Greensville to handle an estate in 1829 and then is gone.I don't know at present whether this Richard Barnes married into the Adams family of Sussex Co. in 1820 or whether it was Richard Barnes, son of Susannah, who married first Polly Wray 1817.
Carolyn
