As you know, Seth Barnes was born in South Carolina in 1814 and died in Louisiana in 1898. His son, Hugh Aylmer Barnes, was born July 30, 1845 in Georgia. Hugh served in the Civil War. He later became mayor of Minden, Louisiana.
My ggrandfather, James Seth Barnes, was born in Louisiana in 1854.James Seth Barnes named his son Aylmer Jack Barnes. In the 1880 census, James Seth Barnes was living in Webster Parish, where Seth Barnes died.
I believe James Seth Barnes to be Seth's son. However, given the state of affairs in the Confederacy, there are no census records for 1860 or 1870 for Seth Barnes and his family.By 1880, James Seth and his wife had started their own family.
As to the family before coming to Virginia, I have found two alternate family lines on various web sites.I have not personally verified much information.
The websites agree that Edward Barnes arrived in Isle of Wight, Virginia in 1635 and married Sarah Pope. From then on, the information is muddled. The family either descended from the Barnes family that remained in Isle of Wight, Virginia or moved to Edgecombe, North Carolina. I am inclined to go with the North Carolina version. I did find evidence that there was a Pope family in North Carolina. I also found a cite to a will in Isle of Wight that supports this version.I believe some of the confusion may have been caused when two Barnes men married two Whitley women. Who married whom messed things up.
The two versions converge again with Jacob Barnes who died in 1840 in Dale County, Alabama.
That is as far as I have gotten.
