William A. Barnes, hypnotist b. DC 1865, Boston 1900, to Cleveland 1903
William A. Barnes appears in Boston directories 1898, 1899, 1900, 1901, 1902, "specialist [or instructor] in psychology, hypnotism and personal magnetism, taught privately, with special applications for surgery, medicine, and business and social affairs." (He gave his occupation as "professor of psychology" in the 1900 census.)
Am searching for more data (esp. post-1903) on William A. Barnes (1865-1903+), b. DC Jan. 1865, son of William H. Barnes (1839-1920+), b. Maine, and his first wife Harriet Murry Beebe (1838-1914), b. Brooklyn NY. The parents were later of Santa Monica, Calif. In censuses Harriet was called the mother of 9 children, 7 living in 1900, 6 living in 1910. The Barnes kids were:
Henry G. Barnes b. DC 1862
Mary E. Barnes b. DC 1863, found in Brooklyn 1880 as b. MD
William A. Barnes, b. DC 1865, found in Rome, Penn. 1880 - future hypnotist
Charles Hall Barnes, b. DC 1866, found in Rome, Penn. 1880, later a Calif. physician
Ella May Barnes, b. DC DC 1869, found in Brooklyn 1880 as b. MD
Hattie G. Barnes, b. 1873, found in Brooklyn 1880 as b. MD
Maggie S. Barnes, b. 1876, found in Brooklyn 1880 as b. MD
Emma S. Barnes, b. 1878, found in Brooklyn 1880 as b. MD
Another child who died young - makes the total of 9.
The boys were in their parents' household in DC, 1870. By 1880 the parents were in Brooklyn living with their five daughters, but without the three boys, at least two of whom (William and Charles) had been placed in employers' households in Rome, Bradford Co., Penn. (the town where their uncle Abner Beebe lived).
In 1900, the hypnotist William A. Barnes's household at 505 Massachusetts Avenue, Boston (corner of Mass. Ave. & Tremont St.) consisted of himself, ae. 35, b. D.C., father b. Maine, mother b. New York state; wife Mary G., 37, b. Texas ca. Oct. 1863, father b. Texas, mother b. Alabama. They had been married four years. Also in the home was daughter Ellen B., 12, b. Texas ca. April 1888, father b. D.C., mother b. Alabama - which suggests that William A. Barnes may have been married previously.
The 1903 Boston directory states that William A. Barnes had removed to Cleveland, Ohio (circumstances unknown). I didn't find him in the 1910 HeritageQuest index but realize that it's not always complete. I'd like to be able to tell my friend what became of her great-great-uncle the hypnotist, and his family.
Thank you very much!
