Very Old Barndens
While I have had no luck in making connections between the different Barndens due to so many holes in the historical record, I was looking at some medieval tax records for Sussex recently and it seems there were a few ancestors around even then. The first lay subsidy tax is for 1296, and there were Barndens in Piddinghoe, Meeching (Newhaven), Brighton, Iford and Denton. In the next subsidies 30 years later there were even more, though still around the same area. The names vary from de Berndon, Bardon to de Berndoune, but I'm fairly sure they're ours. Some of them were paying a fair amount of tax, so they probably had substantial land holdings.
