Bob - I am researching the origins of my surname and in doing so, I've begun to suspect that BARNBROOK and BENBROOK are variants of the same name (try saying them with a 'country' accent...). For example, I have one case where a man born Reuben BARNBROOK emigrated to New Zealand as Reuben BENBROOK.
As a result, I have begun to collect occurrences of the name BARNBROOK, and this might be of interest to you. The name BARNBROOK is concentrated in the West Midlands - principally Warwickshire and Worcestershire. The same is, incidentally, true of the name BENBROOK (although not the similarly sounding name BANBROOK). Although your father-in-law was born in Dulwich, his ancestors are more likely to have come from Dudley!
I do have a copy of a document dated 1456 which mentions the name BARNBROOKE, so you can see it's a name with some history!
If I can tell you more, then please email me off-list.
