I also meant to say, about Lily Ware, wife of Christopher Barnard and mother of Walter etc. I tried to identify her in the 1901 census, but there are too many people who could be her to be sure about her, not knowing any of her personal details (age, place of birth, parents' names). That's what you need the Christopher + Lily 1909 marriage certificate for -- to get her age and father's name. Remember, we know Walter's mother's surname was Ware from the 1912 birth entry, so the Christopher Barnard + Lily Ware marriage in 1909 in the same registry district pretty much has to be them. But matching her name on Walter's birth cert to the name on the marriage cert will prove it. With her age and father's name, we'd look for her in the 1901 and 1891 censuses. The census would give a place of birth, although it's not always reliable. Then, with age and place of birth, we could try to identify her birth in the GRO index, via FreeBMD. And the birth cert would give both her parents' names. And so on! Looking at the 1891 and 1901 censuses now, there are just too many possibles -- also keeping in mind that she could have been recorded in the census as Lilly or Lillie, or she may even have been Lilian. And she could theoretically have come from somewhere nowhere near London. Notify Administrator about this message?
