Good stuff then, you're on the right track with the Christopher George I found, I'd be pretty sure.

What I'd do is order both his marriage certificate and his birth certificate.

The marriage certificate is your starting point -- you know who he married, so you know you have the right person. It will give his father's name.

The father's name on the birth certificate will confirm that it's the right one. And it will give you the mother's birth surname. And then you can find the marriage and be sure it's the right one. You'd be amazed how many Barnards there were kicking around in England!

The marriage certificate will also give the parties' ages when they married, and their fathers' occupations.

With that, a definite sighting in the censuses should be possible. The censuses will give dates and places of birth for the parents. Then they can be tracked back the same way.

Like I said, I'll be happy to do it via the records available at Ancestry, once you have the info about Christopher's parents. Are you looking for info about Lilian too? Not sure what your relationship with them is.

Meanwhile, just play at FreeBMD and see what you can find. You should be able to identify the births of at least some of the children of Christopher and Lilian, with approx dates and the location to go on.

If I've got the right household in 1901 -- father James was a confectioner and Christopher was a collar cutter -- this is them in 1891:

Arthur J Barnard        2
Christopher G Barnard        6
Edwin F Barnard        7
James R Barnard        38
Mary A Barnard        32

so that was the sum total of the kids in the family.

This -- still on spec until you get Christopher's birth cert -- is his father James's birth:

Name:        James Richard Barnard
Year of Registration:        1852
Quarter of Registration:        Oct-Nov-Dec
District:        St Saviour Southwark
County:        London, Surrey
Volume:        1d
Page:        34

But I'm absolutely blowed if I can find a marriage that looks like him and Mary A. That will have to wait for Christopher's birth cert.

I can take you back as far as 1841 on the censuses, which might give you the grandparents of James and Mary A, depending on how old their parents were and when they married.

So just let me know if you decide to get those certificates!
