Hi Kathryn: You are the first person that I have found that mentioned Chilmark as the possible location of Thomas Barnard b.1612. Years ago I went to the Archives in Nantucket Island and found a old piece of paper that I copied with the first three lines that were hand written. "Thomas Barnard, Chilmark, Wiltshire Co, England" It did not give his birth date but death as 1676. Along with this mention of Chilmark, our family tradition said that our line of Barnards came from Chilmark. I have been to Chilmark and this is just a little hamlet that you would not pick out from a map of England without some reason. There are no research facilities in Chilmark since the records of all the small hamlets and churches have been taken to central repositories. I descend from Nathaniel, Benjamin 1681-1729, Timothy 1712-1749.Benjamiin 1735-1792, Shubael 1771-1851, Jonthan 1806-1863, Benjamin 1832-1909, John F. 1867-1939 and my father Russell D. 1898-1986. Most of the family ended up in Carroll Co, Indiana. Now my speculation, they came from Nothern England (near Barnard's castle) to Wiltshire before coming to Nantucket and the mainline coast. Hope this gives you something to reflect on. I have no male relatives living to have DNA samples done on but if you have a chance, please do. It may clear up some of our ideas. We have done it on my husband's cousin, and it is fun. Dorcas Beaver
