A biography of William E. Barnard is included in "Montana, Its Story and Biography", Vol 3, page 1110. Parents: Thomas and Rebecca (Helm) Barnard, born in England and Philadelphia, PA, respectively. Thomas died in 1893, age 78; Rebecca died June 1888, age 68. They had five sons and two daughters: Thomas B. (died at Gettysburg); Fred B. (d. 1896, NYC), Rebecca (Mrs. Charles Betts, d. Mount Kisco, NY), Frank (d. Kansas City, MO), Charles (d. Mount Kisco, NY), Sarah (Mrs. Thomas Armstrong, Armonk, NY).
As a child, William was taken by his parents to Westchester, NY, where he grew up. In 1883, William and his brother engaged in the cattle business in Sweetwater, NM. In 1888, came to Powder River, MT, where they bought a store, thirty head of cattle, and each homesteaded near Powderville, where they farmed and ranched. William became postmaster of Powderville for more than 31 years.
William married Mrs. Regina Warter, of London, England. Their daughter by adoption is Dorothy Arline Barnard, born in Montana.
