I mention Michican to catch the eye of my many USAmerican cousins. ;) (please see post from October 2006 re Barnard women who emigrated to Michigan after marriage around the 1920s -- I'm looking for my dad's aunts, born in England in the 1890s) My grx2 grandfather was RICHARD BARNARD who lived in Canterbury, Kent. He reported his date/place of birth, in censuses, as 1821, Bristol. I only know of him by finding my grandfather as a child in 1901 in Salisbury, Wiltshire, and tracing his father back to his Canterbury as a child. Richard reported on his marriage certificate to Mary Cowdell that his father was RICHARD BARNARD, "gold beater". This seems to be Richard Barnard, "gold beater", born 1790 or 1792, in the workhouse in Mere, Salisbury, in the 1851 and 1861 censuses. He died in Mere in 1869, per the English GRO index. I can find nothing about him, for one thing because I simply can't find him in the 1841 census. Don't know his wife's name, or whether his son Richard had siblings. I did just find this at familyhistoryonline.net: Group number 2651 in Wiltshire Removal Orders. WSRO ref 438/42 1. Name Benjamin BARNARD Head? y Date 1792 Jan Aged – Removed from Poole St James DOR to Mere husb of Mary 2. Name Mary BARNARD wife of Benjamin 3. Name Ann BARNARD Aged 6 dau of Benjamin & Mary 4. Name Thomas BARNARD Aged 1 son of Benjamin & Mary They were ordered to leave Dorset and return to Mere, Wiltshire -- in order not to be a burden on the public in Dorset, they had to return to their place of residence, which would be Thomas's place of birth, if they had not established a residence elsewhere. (I have not yet tried to obtain further details about the order.) It looks to me like this must be the parents and siblings of my Richard -- Richard would likely have been born in 1792, shortly after they returned to Mere. The IGI, unfortunately, has virtually nothing for Mere. Because I don't know where Benjamin and Mary's son Thomas (1791) or daughter Ann (1786) were born, or of course who daughter Ann married, it's pretty impossible to identify them in English censuses 1841+. Does anyone anywhere have Barnards in Mere, Salisbury, England?? These seem to be about the only ones! Or even a Benjamin or Thomas or Ann who look somewhat like these ones ... If so, I'd love to hear. Notify Administrator about this message?
