First, geography. Before 1796 there was no State of Tennessee. The area that became Washington,Sullivan and Greene counties, Tennesse was part of North Carolina. Land grants in the 1780s and early 1790s were by the State of N.Car., petitions in the1780s were addressed to the N.Car. government. Roane County was formed in 1801 from Knox and Blount counties, Knox from Greene and Hawkins in 1782(still N.Car.) and Hawkins 1786. I have a petition dated 1787 when this area was the short-lived "State of Franklin" headed by Col. John Sevier, later the first Tenn. governor, whose mother was a Goad. John Barnard was not on this 1787 list.

In 1777 Pittsylvania County, Virginia, a list of oath takers included John Barnard, four Goads, seven Daltons,
Patrick Morrison,Bryant Ward Nowlin, Abel Morgan, ninety others. Those mentioned above by name moved to the Wautaga/Franklin/Sullivan area soon after 1777.

Patrick Morrison had children who married William Goad (Betsy(), son of John Goad, brother to John Sevier's mother.Joannah Goad; a daughter of John Barnard and a daughter who married James Waldrup/Waldrop, also from Pittsylvania County. John Barnard had a daughtrer Sally who married Vachel Light.

By ca 1820-1830 Hawkins County, Tennesse,. Morrisons,Barnards, Lights and Daltons (also from Pittsylvania) were inter-married several times.

In 1782, John Goad moved to Sullivan County and located on Bays Mountain outside present Kingsp[ort. Bays <Mt. lies acrosds the present county line of Sullivan and Hawkins counties. Deeds recorded there before 1800 indicate Goad, Dalton. several Morrisons, Abel Morgan, Bryant Nowlin, James Waldrop were all neighbors.

Patrick Morrison and William Goad had arrived before 1780 as both fought at King's Mountain under John Sevier in October, 1780.

Some here cite the 1790 Pittsylvania "census". There was no such census. What is the so-called 1790 "census" was actually the tax lists for 1782 and 1785. Hence one appearing on these tax lists could have been long gone by 1790 which was the case with John Barnard and others named above.

I will add to this on my next message.
