Dear Cousin Robert,
You have indeed found the Fred Gamble you have been seeking. I am happy to be in touch with you and will give you such help as I can. For several years, I worked on my genealogy and I may have more information in those files that would interest you than I have at my finger tips now.
My recollection is that Benjamin B. Barmore (my great grandfather on my maternal grandmother's side) came to Texas from Mississippi in a covered wagon when my grandmother Josephine was a young girl. They settled in Milano, Milam County, Texas, and lived out their lives there. I have never heard of anyone moving to Indiana.
B.B. Barmore served in the Mississippi army during the Civil War. In Texas, he practiced medicine and served as a lay preacher for the Church of the New Jerusalem, a Christian denomination based on the Bible and the writings of Emanuel Swedenborg. I have no idea what kind of training B.B. had in either field.
My mother, Leona Aileen Crain Gamble, Josephine's daughter, said he rode circuit on horseback and rolled bread pills on his thigh as he went along so that he could always offer medicine to those who wanted it. His patients were largely unsophisticated. They would return empty capsules to him after they had swallowed the contents. Bowel movement were described in exquisite detail. He recalled one woman telling him she had "made quite a pile."
My brother, David Earl Gamble, M.D., has B.B. Barmore's license to practice medicine in Texas, several prescriptions he wrote, and his eye glass frames.
My sister, Prof. Elizabeth Gamble Miller, has a photograph of Mary Elizabeth Davis Barmore and two of her sisters, all sitting on a front porch in rocking chairs. They were a grim looking bunch.
