David,

Samuel D. Barley was born abt. 1814, in Virginia. He was in Madison County, Alabama as early as May of 1821, when he married his first wife, Pelina Hambrick (d/o Joseph V. Hambrick and Ruthy Payne). Samuel and Pelina had at least 3 children, Joseph W. Barley ( B. abt. 1839, a Private in Co. K, 4th Alabama Calvary (Russell's) during the Civil War and married to Elizabeth "Bettie" Irby on Jan 25, 1882); Dickson Barley and Ruth Barley. After the death of Pelina Hambrick, Samuel married her cousin, Mary Ann Campbell, in December of 1856.

Samuel and his family lived in what was known as "Golden Hollow" during the 1860's, but is now known as Sharp's Cove, as can be attested to by the Sharp family that now resides there.

On Dec. 12, 1876, Samuel D. Barley was awarded a judgment against the widow of his neighbor, Shadrack Golden ( a little over 11 years after his death), in the amount of $42.30. Due to the fact that just about all documents pertaining to the Shadrack Golden family have mysteriously disappeared from the library in Huntsville, I cannot find out why he sued her. However, I did find where Samuel D. Barley was in turn sued by the "Officers of Court" for the sum of $67.40, in Jan. of 1881 for the costs of his lawsuit against the Widow Golden.

Samuel D. Barley died in 1890 and was buried next to his mother, Elizabeth Barley, in the Hambrick Cemetery in Hurricane Valley.
