I am a descendant of John Barley and wife Elizabeth of Halifax Co. VA. In Deed Book 10-101, dated 25 Aug 1766, recorded 15 Aug 1776, John Phelps sold to John Barley, both of Halifax Co, 164 acres on Terrible Creek. John died intestate, but Elizabeth left will 1815 Will Book 10-164, naming children and grandchildren, including son (your John Barley) and daughter Elizabeth Barley who married Elijah Tucker (my ancestors).
Another genealogist friend and descendant and I have been unable to determine the ancestry of either John Barley Sr or his wife Elizabeth, or where they came from to Halifax Co. Do you have any info since your original post to this forum? Lets communicate about this. B. DeRoy Beale
