I am interested in your message because I am also researching the Barleys in my line and the family story is that one of our Barleys married a Spanish lady - "a Spanish Grandee". Your Portugese connection interests me! I can trace my Barleys back as far as James Barley born (approx 1800) who married Sophia Hoare (born 1801). Sophia was born in Hertfordshire, England and they had a son, Charles, born approx 1839 in Sussex, England. Do you think we may have a connection
