The University of NC at Greensboro is working on a slavery/free persons of color project. By using Google as a search engine and typing in the words "free persons of color", a site came up that contains the petition of Andrew Barland to the Mississippi State Legislature in which he states his ethnicity. At this site you can view a copy of the original and the transcription.
Not researching Barland, but interested in Mississippi history.
