Notes: "Had left Queen Anne's Co., Maryland by 1768.Possibly resided in Kent Co., Delaware, where he was taxed in 1790 in Little Creek Hundred.Could be the same James Barcus who, along with William Burrows and Samuel Hatfield, were indicted by the Kent Co. Court for being traitors and rolyalists,April15, 1778 (Delaware Archives, pg. 1285)."
Will: "In the name of God amen.I James Barcus, of Brooke Co., Virginia, being weak of body, but of sound mind and memory, do make and ordain this my last Will and Testament.To witt:
1. To my son, William Barcus, the sum of (five?)shillings and no more of my estate.
2. To my son, Ebenazer Barcus, the sum of five shillings.
3. To my son, James Barkus, the sum of five shillings.
4. To my daughter, Elizabeth Beltch, the sum of five shillings.
5. To my daughter, Mary Hedges, the sum of five shillings.
6. To my son, John Barcus, the sum of five shillings.
7. To my son, Charles Barcus, my sorrel mare and colt and my best bed furniture. Then it is my will and desire that after all my lawful debts are paid then all the rest of my estate shall be equally divided between two sons, Joshua and Charles Barcus, and their heirs forever, but in case my son, Charles Barcus, should die without heirs, then in that case, the land may fall to his share to descend to my son, William Barcus, and his heirs forever.And lastly of all, I do hereby appoint my two sons, Joshua Barcus and Charles Barcus, to be my whole and sole executors of this my last will and testament.I the said James Barcus, have set my hand and seal.Signed: James Barcus"
The will was written in 1800, apparently in Brooke Co., VA (now WVA),and filed for probate across the Ohio River in Steubenville, Jefferson County, Ohio in 1803.
