Sir Charles Middleton (born 14 Oct 1742; died 17 June 1813)was a distinguished British naval officer who ended his carrier as First Lord of the Admiralty (equivalent of Chief of Naval Operations), having been created 1st Baron Barham, of Barham Court and Teston, Kent, in 1805. He and his wife were friends of Dr Samuel Johnson, Hannah More and William Wilberforce, and sympathetic to the latter in his fight to end the Slave Trade. The source for this is the classic genealogical work Burke's Peerage and Baronetage, which is about to be re-published in its 106th edition. The relevant entry will be found under the Earl of Gainsborough, as one of the latter's subsidiary titles is Lord Barham. I hope this is a help.
