Independence (MO)Pictorial News, July 5 1962: Nine members of the Barham family were together Sunday for the first time in 25 yrs. Brothers and sisters ranging from age 68-91 gathered at the home of Lena Beck, Independence MO. Family members are Margaret Edwards, 91, James Louis Barham, 86, Mrs. Beck, 84, Martha Green, 81, Jess Barham, 80, Mary Hare, 77, Alta Dutton, 71 and William Luther Barham, 68. Another brother, John Alfred Barham died 20 years ago. The 4 oldest children who were born in Henry TN came to southern MO in a covered wagon in 1878. Their father, James T. Barham, a civil war veteran, brought his wife and family including the 6 mo old Lena to MO for the health of the children. The lowlands of TN where they lived was a breeding ground for malaria. His wife's parents and 2 of her brothers also made the trip and the family settled down near Mtn. Grove MO. As time went on the children began to grow up and marry and move away from home. Mrs. Barham's health, never strong following the war, began to fail rapidly and Lena moved to Independence, arriving there by covered wagon in 1896. She met her husband there and they were married the following year. Her sister and family came next. After their father died and the family was grown, their mother came to live with Mrs. Beck. She lived to be 97 despite two broken hips from which she had recovered. At the reunion 25 years ago Mrs. Barham had all 10 of her children together for the first time because the youngest, William Luther, was born after the oldest son, John Alfred, had married and left MO.
