LaVonne, that grizzly bear temper analogy is not just in your branch of the family - it applies to everyone in mine, too!!I believe it has been around as long as the Baers/Bares have been.In fact, it is documented in the family genealogy book (see below) that the Baers/Bares were so named in the Middle Ages, when surnames began to came into wide use by commoners in Europe, because they were powerful and had quick and fierce tempers! So it has actually been the case for some 500 years - and it seems time has not dimmed our ferocity!
Most of the Baers in Switzerland and Germany were Mennonites (a denomination similar to the Amish in the US) and did indeed flee their homeland in the 1700s and 1800s because they were being persecuted for their religious beliefs. This is also documented in the family genealogy book "Bare Roots"While many of them came to America, I'm sure some settled other European countries, such as Scotland as well.As soon as I am able to get my hands on a copy of this book, I'll be happy to look up your family and see if I can find any mention of them.Feel free to email me whatever information you have and I'll let you know when I get the book.
