John Barden, born born 1863, died July 12, 1907. He was married to Margaret Craney. His parents were Michael Barden and Margaret Mooney. Their children, Mary and Margaret Barden, were born in 1889 and 1892, respectively. My father-in-law remembers the Ciani family. There were also two boys, John and Thomas Gorman, who were apparently adopted by the Bardens.

I found the record of James Barden and his family with Henry, Elizabeth, Arthur, and William being born in Jersey City. I haven't found the city in New York State that they moved to. Thank you for that information!

I don't know why she was put into an orphanage. I know my husband's grandfather was also in one for a few years before a member of the family took him in. I imagine there were very hard times for all during those years. As far as I know, though, John did not remarry. He died in 1907. There was a name I found on a 1900 census with John and his children's. It was Kate. She was recorded as born in 1863. She is listed as John's wife. I don't know why these two names come up in connection with John. They lived in Manhatten on East 17th St., #406. His occupation was listed as a jeweler. Does this sound right?

Sometimes these family records can be very misleading when you look at the census data and other input, like death certificates. People recorded what they thought was right, but it isn't always what really happened. That's why genealogists are never really sure of their data. Someone could have had a bad day when they filled out a form! I hope this helps...

Thank you,
