Ted, The surname BARKLEY is usually associated with Northern Ireland. Counties Antrim, Londonderry, Longford and Tyrone are likely areas to look. My Barkleys were Presbyterians who left Ireland in 1729. Those Barkleys who didn't leave went to County Tyrone about that time. Since not all the Barkleys left Ireland until many years later when some more emmigrated, it is possible that your Alexander b. 1776 could be distantly related to my line somehow. The ? is how. As a retired New Yorker now living in County Clare, Ireland, I have found that Irish records are practicallly non-existent for the 1700's. One possibility exists, however, as most of the Barkleys then (a very closenet group) were Freemasons, I am going to explore with the Grand Lodge of Ireland the possibility of getting some access to records they hae sequestered away. Sooo, if you know that your Alexander was a Freemason and Presbyterian as well, there is a remote chance I may come across some record of him here. My Barkleys settled in 1730 in Orange County N.Y. (then Ulster County), and had relatives both in NYC and Somerset County, N.J. who preceded their immigration in 1715. You might also try writing the Irish Presbyterian Church as well, but I had no luch in that respect as far back as before 1730. Perhgaps by 1798, records may exist somewhere in NI. Cheers !!!
