My husband is a descendant of Robert BARKLEY, who came to the US from Scotland in 1772 (or 1774) and settled in Lyman, Grafton Co. NH. He fought in the Revolutionary War (I have a copy of his pension records)and married Rhoda WAY in 1778. Robert died in Lyman in 1804. I have now confirmed our link to Robert and would like to find out about his origins. I have been in contact with several of his descendants, but no one seems to have any firm documentation on him. All they have are town and county histories that included some good (but unsubstantiated) information. Robert was supposedly born 15 Apr 1756, although I've seen 15 Apr 1755 and ca 1754 as birthdates for him. Some researchers say he was born in Glasgow, some say in Stirlingshire. His eldest son was Rev. William BERKLEY, my husband's ancestor. He was a Methodist minister. It is possible, if Robert followed the most common Scottish naming pattern, that his father was a William BARKLEY, but nothing is proven. Are there any other BARKLEY researchers out there? Has anyone run into our Robert while doing research? His sons seem to have begun spelling the name BERKLEY, but Robert's name is always BARKLEY in the records I've seen. I have also seen it as BARCLAY. I welcome any input. Thanks. Vickie Elam White VEWhite@aol.com or 102657.1616@compuserve.com
