James Walter Barclay b. 1871 was the son
of James Walter Barclay b.1831 and Mary Hoffey or Huffey. His Barclay grandparents were Robert Barclay and Sarah McKinsey. His great grandparents were Walter Barclay b.1774 in Rowan County NC and Elizabeth McQueen b. 1790 in Kentky. His great great grand parents on the Barclay side were Robert Barclay b.1718 and Leah Madison Barclay, of Rowan County, NC.
James WalterBarclay married Laura Pool b.1873in Tyler Co Tx around 1888 when he was 18 and she was 17. They established their home on a farm he bought from Uncle Henry in the Mt Zion area, 9 miles north of Woodville and 4 miles south of Chester off the road where the historic Mt Zion Church stands today.
James Walter was known as Walter, Uncle Walter, and Mr Barclay. He and Laura had 14 children, 11 of whom lived to adulthood. They were; Myrtie,Clara (died as a baby), Clyde, Mary, Eula, James Buchanan (Buck), Joshua Walter (named for mother Laura's father Josh W Pool), Riley (named for the Riley family, Laura's mother Alice Delila Riley Pool Bourn Barclay. Riley died as a baby), Robert, George Willis (named for his uncle Willis Bourn), Ora and Lora, twins (Lora died as a baby), Louise and the baby Henry Feagin, (named for Walter's brother Henry).
Closely related were the family of Henry, Walter's brother, and Clara, Laura's sister and their 8 chilren and the children of Henry's later wife from Louisana, and her two children, who went back to Louisana, and May and her two children.All of these children were first cousins to Walter and Laura's children, but the children of Henry and Clara were double first cousins.
Also closely related was the Barclay family of Laura and Clara Pool's mother Alice Delila Riley, who married James "Jim" Barclay of the Peach Tree area, overseer of the property of John Henry Kirby. This family raised 17 children, all aunts and uncles to Walter and Laura's children. They were the 12 Barclay children, the 4 Pool children and the Bourn son from earlier marriages of Alice Delila; Josh W Pool was shot dead by a neighbor in an incident over a horse, and Will Bourn died of yellow fever.
