Some descendants of Robert Barkley m to Leah's son Walter m to Elizabeth McQueen got into DAR from Tyler Co Texas through Capt Robert Barkley of Rowan Co NC's record.
Also, see information online about the Battle of Kings Mountain, the old brick house and various other battles with Tories - oopps- Loyalists in South Carolina. There were men from Rowan Co NC there and the other surrounding states. It just took place in SC. also Capt Cowan m to Mary Barkley daug of Robert Barkley m to Eleanor and her brothers were in this battle. These men were all patriot soldiers (volunteers), not part of the continental army. Oh yes, there were Barkleys on both sides of the battle. A high ranking Barkley was there on the side of the Loyalists. There is a national park there established around 1932, which is likely where the monument was, there are several. (This is likely the place where the Senator from Kentucky and later VP Alben Barkley did the dedication of the DAR mounument. He was descended from the Barkleys of Rowan county, line of Robert m to Eleanor, as was Pres Lyndon B Johnson through the Barkley Cowan family. Alben Barkley was big in the ongoing reunion of that Barkley family and did some research that they have in his handwriting, signed, I believe. It was said he could do the Barkley/Barclay begets with the best of them)Recall he was the senator from Kentucky many terms before being VP in the Truman Administration and then went back to the senate after VP I believe. See Barclay Bastion. On other comment about Cousin Alben. I did research on the Democratic Convention of 1928 which was in HOuston, Texas. Some sources said, dont ask which, I do not recall but it was online, that Alben Barkley would have been the likely candidate for Pres. if it had not been Al Smith). I compliled a lengthy paper from items on the net about the battle of Kings Mountain, and posted it with either the Tyler County Genealogical Society website or the Barclay Bastion, I forget which at this moment. You can find a lot by using a strong search engine with key words, such as Battle of Kings Mountain, SC. This fighting was fierce and a turning point in the revolution. SC and the surround area was a hotbed of revolutionary activity. Although no fighting took place in Jersey settlement, these Rowan county men went elsewhere to fight in the revolution.
