Rick,
My G.Grandfather, George Barclay, was born 1838 and died 1870, so no help there.
Last night I had a quick look at the GRO lists for England & Wales. I found a George Barclay born 1841 in registration district Erpingham, Norfolk, and a possible sister Eliza Johnson Barclay born 1843.
East Anglia was a major wheat growing area until it was eclipsed by the North American prairies.
I also found a John George Barclay (note I am called by my second name) born 1842 in Stepney, East London.
Was your George Barclay born in England or did he simply take ship from England, in which case he may have been born in Scotland, Ireland or elsewhere?
Hugh McG.
